Analysis Of Image And Trailer

Friday The 13th was produced by two film companies. Paramount Pictures, who
Produced the 8 nominated academy award winning films Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark with Harrison Ford. It was also produced, New Line Cinema, who produced one of Hollywood's major film studios, culminating in the hit Lord of the Rings the Trilogy. In Friday The 13th major celebrities should be expected to be in the upcoming Friday The 13th as previous movies from the studios had big actors.

The film poster of Friday The 13th the text is in white but also red which is an iconography of horror as red connotes blood and death and also connotes that this is a horror. Secondly in the middle of the poster there is a very large figure (Jason Voorhees) he has a huge knife in his hand and wears a mask which is iconography of horror as it connotes death and mystery. Also there is a mist in the background which could possibly connote that there is a mystery or twist in this film.

What is very shocking is that they have not included any names of the actors; this is possibly the film already has a huge franchise, fallary via the pereves film .The tagline “Welcome To Crystal Lake” tells the audience that the story is placed in “Crystal Lake”. USP is the use of telling the audience that they are “producers of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, as it makes other audiences that watched Chainsaw Massacre want to go and watch this film. The poster is aimed at male and women aged 18-45 as it is a horror and is most stereotypical ages used to watch a horror. Also is an iconography of horror is used effectively a dark forest and possibly connotes that it is a horror and gives clues to the audience of the films narrative and gives a little of what to expect.

The poster, doesn’t tells the audience what the narrative is, any clues just giving us the location and the main character. However I predict the actors will be A-list celebrities as from past movies from the label most of the actors were A-list known.

As a result the film poster is amateur compared to other Hollywood posters. There are some iconography and USP, but on a whole the poster is not the greatest I have seen.  Even the colors are two basic with a dark shade, however on the whole the film poster is ok.
In the film trailer of Friday The 13th a lot of more plot and detail are revealed. The trailer starts with a non-diegetic voiceover and last towards the end. The non-diegetic voice over gives information about the plot and the main character (Jason Voorhees). Also the voice over describes that “today is his birthday” and tells the audience the reason why it is called Friday The 13th as it is (Jason Voorees) “birthday”.

In the terms of mise-en-scene, the trailer effect deploy a whole load of it, for e.g., dark forest, knifes and huts. The use of diegetic-sounds connote that the film is a horror as they use screaming, slashes of knifes and howling of wolves. These me all very common in the horror genre, confiriming  Steve Nash theory of genre reputation and difference.

During the trailer you see a lot of mid shots and close ups as they intensify the characters emotions and what state they are. This technique makes the audience engage to the trailer, and feel as if they are there, once again very common in horror films. This trailer is aimed at 15- 45, as it is a more of a modern horror.

I believe that this film is related to the psychographics of aspirers as this a new and upgraded version of this franchise with new flashy and expensive effects which would imply to an aspire aspect. Also I believe that the demographics are presented to a C1 audience as it would cost a average £5-£10 to watch it which is a average price.

In conclusion I think the film trailer is much more effective compared to the poster, although they both convey the horror and drama. I feel the trailer is much more effective as most of the actual events from the film are used, therefore the audience will be very scared and make them want to go and watch them.

  1. W.W.W - You have analysed some aspects of the poster and moving image briefly.
E.B.I - The task was to focus mainly on lighting and how effective it is through the two platforms e.g - Low key lighting, back lighting have been used alot in this poster of... this connotes....
Also, you need to proof read your work as it is not structured well, your punctuation lacks and you need to highlight the key words.
You could also, include some media theories such as what does the moving image connote about the equilibrium - is it a liner narrative/ multistrand?
